Thiru was called to the Bar in 1999 after chambering with the late Mr. R. Palakrishnan, Senior Counsel. Thiru continued to work closely with Pala for 3 years on numerous matters. Despite his passing, Pala continues to inspire Thiru.
In 2002, Thiru left Pala and joined Rajah & Tann as an Associate. Whilst there, Thiru was invited to join Tyco International Ltd, a US conglomerate, as its Legal Counsel. At Tyco, Thiru served the diverse needs of over 200 Tyco companies in Asia with a total turnover exceeding US$ 3billion. After almost 3 years with Tyco, Thiru was headhunted for the position of Group Legal Counsel of Oiltools International Inc, an oil and gas MNC headquartered in Singapore.
Unable to resist the action and challenge of litigation, Thiru returned to practice. Building on the success of Thiru & Co, Trident Law Corporation was incorporated in 2013 with Thiru as the Principal and Managing Director.
Thiru has been involved in a good number of civil and criminal matters in the High Court and the Court of Appeal.
In the landmark case of Ismil Bin Kadar, Thiru received high commendation from the Court of Appeal for his impassioned advocacy and meticulous attention to detail. Thiru also successfully obtained an acquittal against the capital drug trafficking charge in the case of PP v Phuthita Somchit. At the trial, Thiru had argued that Somchit was “rendered blind and was not willfully blind” as to the specific nature of the drugs.
Thiru was appointed to the Singapore Academy of Law’s Professional Affairs Committee and also to the Law Society’s Council Pro Bono Committee.
Thiru credits his strength to the instruction that he has had in the University of Life. A President Scout awardee, Thiru also has a Private Pilot’s Licence.
